Republicans have filed a formal complaint against Google with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) over allegations the tech giant unfairly censored GOP fundraising emails.
Context: A North Carolina State University study found that throughout the 2020 election cycle Gmail allowed the majority of emails from Democrats into users’ inboxes, while more than two-thirds of emails from Republicans were filtered into spam folders.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) estimated that conservative candidates missed out on $2 billion in contributions because their emails were routed to spam folders.
What Happened: On April 26, Republican National Committee (RNC), National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) filed a complaint with the FEC over Google’s alleged censorship.
