The Ambassador Bridge connecting Ontario to Detroit has been blocked by protesting truckers for four days straight.
The Background: A massive protest made up of truckers has occupied Canada’s capital for fourteen days. They are protesting the country’s COVID restrictions. Monday night, part of the convoy moved to blockade the Ambassador Bridge, a major commerce route that sees an average of $300 million in goods cross daily. Until Thursday, the Biden administration made no statements or comments on the blockade.
The Details: President Joe Biden urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to use federal powers to the the truck blockade. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke with his Canadian counterpart to help resolve the standoff. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens announced he is seeking a court injunction to end what he describes as an occupation.
“The economic harm is not sustainable and it must come to an end,” he said.
