Democrats and Republicans Reject Trump’s Election Proposal

The president reasoned on Twitter Thursday morning that pushing back the upcoming presidential election would be safer and more secure for American voters.

However, only Congress has that authority, leading some to suspect that President Trump was attempting to troll the left and to motivate his base to vote.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reposted Trump’s tweet just hours later, with the caption: “Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution states:

“‘The Congress may determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.'”

In Senator Lamar Alexander’s comments, he reminded reporters that if a president is not elected by January 20, Pelosi would take the position by default.

Alexander is Tennessee’s senior U.S. Senator. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also chimed in, reiterating that the election date is set in stone.
