Pelosi Urges New Deal On Key Economic Sector

Via The Washington Examiner:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to negotiate with bipartisan leaders in both chambers to secure a deal to provide additional federal funding for small businesses.

“The speaker recommends proceeding on a bipartisan basis involving the four corners of the House and Senate so that Congress can move expeditiously on an interim package and a CARES 2 package to put additional money in the hands of those who need it most and ensure our front-line workers have the resources they need,” Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said Friday.

Mnuchin asked Congress to pass a $251 billion measure to replenish a fund to help small businesses keep employees on the payroll. Democrats blocked the measure Thursday and are demanding change to the measure to ensure smaller businesses can gain access to the aid. Democrats are also seeking an additional $100 billion for hospitals and $150 billion for state and local governments to deal with the coronavirus impact. Lawmakers are calling the bill an interim measure that follows three previous economic aid bills. Congress and Trump are also planning a fourth economic relief measure.

Trump told reporters Friday he would “rather have” the extra money Democrats are seeking to be included in the fourth bill, not the interim package for small businesses Mnuchin is seeking.
