Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fired back at critics who lambasted the lawmaker for wearing a designer dress during a high-profile appearance on ABC.
The New York Democrat implied she either rented or borrowed the sequin dress that retails for $580 at Saks Fifth Avenue. She did so in a tweet that called out the New York Post for publishing details about the dress days after she defended socialist Bernie Sanders on The View.
“Yep! I rent, borrow, and thrift my clothes,” tweeted Ocasio-Cortez. “(It’s also environmentally sustainable!) The Post is just mad that you can look good fighting for working families. Sequins are a great accessory to universal healthcare, don’t you agree?”
Ocasio-Cortez is the lead member of “the Squad” of liberal congresswomen who have galvanized the far-left base of the Democratic Party in pushing for reforms on healthcare, the environment, and social justice issues. Her Green New Deal proposal would eliminate carbon emissions in the United States within 10 years.
