Rep. Louise Slaughter (N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, has been hospitalized after suffering a concussion in her home, her office announced Wednesday.
Slaughter, 88, is being treated at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., “to receive treatment and monitoring for a concussion” after falling last week at her residence in the nation’s capital, Slaughter’s chief of staff, Liam Fitzsimmons, said in a brief statement.
“She did not suffer any fractures or broken bones and is receiving excellent care from the world-class medical staff at GW hospital,” Fitzsimmons said. “The congresswoman is tough as nails and she will bring that same spirit to this recovery.”
The incident marks at least the second time Slaughter has fallen and suffered injuries in recent years. In 2012, Slaughter spent almost a month in an upstate New York hospital after tripping on uneven pavement and breaking her femur.
