Despite going AWOL, surrendering to the enemy, and endangering his comrades (resulting in deaths and grievous injuries to several soldiers) – not to mention admitting his guilt, a military judge ruled today that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl would not receive prison time.
Army Col. Jeffrey R. Nance ensured Bergdahl received the lightest possible punishment, a dishonorable discharge, agreeing to the requests made by Bergdahl’s defense team.
In their closing arguments, the defense argued that the abuse Bergdahl suffered in Taliban captivity, public criticism by President Trump, and their client’s diagnosed mental illnesses should mitigate his punishment.
Bergdahl could have received a life sentence.
