Rep. Steve Scalise is speaking out for the first time since he was critically injured in a shooting targeting elected Republican officials.
Left-wing activist James T Hodgkinson opened fire during a June 14 GOP congressional baseball practice and injured Scalise and several others, including a Capitol Police officer. Scalise told CBS that he was like “Humpty Dumpty” after the shooting because he sustained so much internal damage.
“I found out later how much damage was done internally,” Scalise said. “My femur was shattered. The hip and pelvis had serious damage where the bullet went through and did some damage to areas that had to be shored up with steel plates and they did a phenomenal job of rebuilding, you know, kind of the rebuilding of Humpty Dumpty.”
Scalise received several blood transfusions and, at one point during his recovery, had to battle a serious blood infection.
